Starts With A Cabbage

Like I said: self taught. I’ve no sense of right or wrong. But a painting is like a puzzle to me. All of the pieces have to fit and nothing should be missing or left over. A guy once asked me how I could draw things as if they were behind another. I don’t really know. That’s how my brain works.

But I feel like that’s one of the tricks of still-life: to depict life in three dimensions. To paint the backs of things, as it were. To imagine your hands moving around the objects. Painting space. What is the light doing back there?
